We’ve decided to get our website going again! In autumn 2019 we went into Funfishers Out-of-School Club to run some fun storytelling and games-based sessions for younger children, met new volunteers at Freshers' Fair, and raised funds for the project at the YUSU Christmas market.​

So far in 2020 we’ve launched our Family Network 'Fairytales From Around the World' programme in schools, and we ran some International Stories sessions at St. Lawrence in Spring term. We’ve carried on with our Family Network sessions and run some craft and storytelling sessions off-campus for children from military families in Fulford. We went to St. Oswald’s school for a World Book Day event. We’ve also been given an award by York Mumbler!

We hope to be back as soon as possible after the new term starts in September.

This term we've had some exciting sessions and joined in some events.

We ran a session with CU in the City on The Story of Things. We made shapes with our bodies, and created improvisations based around props.

We ran a session with SASH at All Saints' High School on youth homelessness, using activities and improvisations to explore how we approach homeslessness and what can lead to it.

We joined in the Family Fun Day for students and staff with children, where we helped make reindeer hats, paper snowflakes and reindeer food. 

It's been a fun and varied term, and we've really enjoyed meeting new volunteers. Next term we're looking forward to more events and getting our regular school sessions running again.

Welcome to a new year of Theatre in Schools!

We have lots of new programmes and events coming up this year which we look forward to updating you on. We're hoping to look at some script-writing and story types in our main school sessions.

If you're interested in volunteering with us, you can come along to the following fairs:

The latest session of Theatres in Schools drew on 'Twelfth Night', focusing on shipwrecks and the various exciting plots we can develop around them. After some games, club members created their own improvisations using a shipwreck as a starting point. This opened up some great opportunities to use props and physical theatre.

Soon the group will be starting to think about putting together a showcase to perform to parents.

This term Theatre in Schools has been trying out a brand new Shakespeare programme at Tang Hall Primary School. Shakespearean plots, tropes and structures are introduced to the children through games and interactive storytelling, and they then create their own improvised pieces around features that interest them.

So far sessions have revolved around 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', which led to fun and exciting pieces about love, magic and transformation, and tragedies such as 'Hamlet', which involved a thrilling fake death competition and improvisations around crime, justice and mystery.

Future sessions will involve plays such as 'Twelfth Night' and 'The Merchant of Venice' - we're looking forward to seeing the innovative ways in which the children react to these stories and develop them through their own imagination.

A new year is on the horizon! The first term is a great time for freshers, and returning students too, to get involved with new societies. If you enjoy creativity, drama, and working with children, then Theatre in Schools is the society for you!

Theatre in Schools is an exciting YUSU volunteering project in which volunteers lead fun and interactive drama workshops in local primary schools.

Sessions are now underway for Theatre in Schools!

After some warm up games of Zip Zap Boing and Splat, this week's session was made up of acting activities focusing on heroes and villains, such as charades and improvisation games - and an exciting showdown between Elsa and Captain America! We thought about what distinguishes a hero or villain, and then how to show that through acting. By looking at characters like Robin Hood, we also thought about the way in which the difference between hero and villain is not always definite.

We're excited to announce that the Theatre in Schools project is officially beginning from Wednesday 22 April!

We will be running sessions every Wednesday in Tang Hall Primary School from 3pm to 4:15pm. The sessions will include games, improvisation and other creative elements.

If you'd like to volunteer you'll need to bring along your ID and DBS check. If you're interested in being part of the project then let us know.

Plans are being put in motion for Theatre in Schools York!

We are currently working on:

• Setting up after school sessions in local primary schools
• Creating exciting ideas for sessions involving Shakespeare, sharks and Vikings!
• Planning our Freshers' Fair stall
